MD OS update from Linux 13 Years, 2 Months ago
Hi everyone, I've recently become the proud owner of a Machinedrum, mkI and non-UW but I'm very happy with it. It's running quite an old OS version so I want to update it.

My computer runs Linux, so I plan to upgrade the MD using this command:
Code: :

 amidi --port=hw:--send=Elektron_SPS1-1UW_OS1.62.syx

Has anyone tried this from Linux before? Got any warnings or anything I should be aware of? I don't want to fry my lovely new toy!

Thanks

Hiya POFM, this is TOFS..

Haven't tried upgrading from Linux myself, but I'm 99.9 % positive that you can't fry the machine just by performing an OS upgrade.

I hope not

I'll give it a go and report back so anyone else searching this forum for "linux" can find the results

when you send a new OS it verifies the transfer before it goes ahead and upgrades the firmware. so if it works, you'll know before you commit.

excellent, I was hoping that's what the "PREPARING FLASH" step described in the manual meant - thanks!

that worked perfectly - I'm running OS v1.62 now

for the benefit of any other linux users who find this thread in the future, I connected a very basic usb-to-midi cable which was recognised by linux with no problems. I ran "amidi -l" to show the midi device name:
Code: :

amidi -l Dir Device    Name IO  hw:1,0,0  USB Midi Cable MIDI 1

In my case that was "hw:1,0,0" which can be abbreviated to just "hw:1"

I ran "amidi -p hw:1 -d" to dump incoming midi data, to check it received ok, then did the update by sending the sysex file using "amidi -p hw:1 -s Elektron_SPS1-1UW_OS1.62.syx"

now to make some noise ...

Just a question, you did that without C6 and wine ?

Yes. I didn't use C6 or Wine, I just used the 'amidi' command, which comes with ALSA.

My post above describes the whole process - it doesn't involve C6 or Wine or anything except the commands I described above.

hey,
do you guys think the entire OS is in an update file, including DSP code? it could be really interesting trying to reverse-engineer that stuff..
