A book on analog synthesis? 18 Years, 3 Months ago
I was wondering if someone knew of a good book that can teach me analog synthesis. I mean, I know the basics like what an osc is and what a VCF and VCA does etc...but after years of only using synths for basslines and simple melodies...I realize I want to go beyond this. For example...I have no clue how to make strings or pads (never used them in my music)...and would love to know this. Also, I have a hard time making bass drums and snare type sounds. I hear songs that are made using one synth for everything including drums. I would like to know how to do this. Any suggestions?

I came across this free(ish) book on the web a while ago...
"How to Make a Noise"
http://www.noisesculpture.com/

I haven't read it so i really can't comment but it might be worth a look ... it does claim to be "the most comprehensive guide to synthesiser programming" for what that's worth

Thanks for the info. Do you know of a more generic source of patches...something that is easy to translate amongst many synths... without it being like a puzzle? Alot of the tutorials seem to be centered on a particular synth with their own jargon.

be sure to check out the series of 'Synth Secrets' articles at Sound On Sound...

http://www.soundonsound.com/index.php?section=%2F&url=%2Fsearch&Keyword=synth+secrets

haven't read through them much myself (other than the handful of original issues that i have), but there's tons of info in there. they specifically go into recreating various instrument and other sounds through different (usually subtractive, i think) types of synthesis. great stuff.

Power Tools for Synthesizer Programming: The Ultimate Reference for Sound Design.

It?s looks cheesy and has a silly title but it?s a really great book. Highly recommend it.
