Tarekith, I posted the info about parts, availability, etc. This is confirmed info, as I heard it straight from Elektron. if for some you still question my information, feel free to email Elektron yourself. I'm not speaking for Elektron, anything I've shared as been relayed to me directly from Elektron and I have asked for permission to share here.

not sure what else you're looking for Tarekith, but i'd direct your queries to support@elektron.se

sidenote: i'm not a fan of hearsay. trying to be the best admin i can be through all this :-D

Wasn't trying to question you, I just didn't realize that was confirmed by Elektron, that's all. Thanks for the clarification.

What a fucking disappointment. I was hoping for something new. These 'upgrades' are WEAK!

Why do you think something new isn't coming? This is just a simple upgrade...it is a normal thing for a company to do.

Oh I don't know? Maybe because they have been teasing us with shit for years and then they come out with a slimmer box, seriously, wtf?

Business 101 - play to you existing market. A new product would have a huge existing market egar to buy. A shitty upgrade does nothing - you really think people were thinking of getting a MD or MnM but stopped and said... "if only the case were 1/4' slimmer"??? I doubt it, I'm not going to sell my MD or MnM to upgrade.

On the flip side though, A lot of engineering work goes into even minor changes like this. Elektron is a small company, so if they have been working on this than chances are they haven't been working on anything else.

Oh, I bet a SPS-1 mkII would be great next to my MD-UW Classic! I have often thought to myself that "The MD's best companion is another MD." Now I have the chance to get one at a discounted price. And that's with 64 steps and master FX ctrl machines! :-o How sweet is that! Now if only I could get a hold of the money somehow...

Go for it Ingrid! Then you'll be in the market for my new MD/MnM MKII 340x176x12mm Spacer Pad, which allows you to use the MKII machines together with the Classic models. No more dealing with the hassle of having thier operating surfaces at different heights.

Sweet!

i think your first statement assumes that the market for mds and mnms has dried up, nkirch, but i don't think that's necessarily the case as a lot of shops have had waiting lists for the md and the mnm. people didn't stop and say, oh I guess I won't buy an mnm or md because the didn't have the upgraded features, they didn't buy them because they weren't available. why? because there was trouble with supply. why? because, as some people on the thread have mentioned, Elektron has explained that the company had trouble getting some of the parts that were originally used in the mnm and md. so they used new parts, and along the way made some hardware modifications and improvements.

So, the new machines may be a shitty upgrade to you, but maybe users like the people on this board aren't Elektron's primary target -- after all most of us are here because we already own the device. It's true that a completely new machine would capture the attention of those that own current Elektron machines and those that do not -- a broader segment of the MI market. But the new machines are likely targeted at the latter group, even though they contain improvements that some in the former category have requested. it depends on which segment of the market you're going to take into account. My guess is that the market for people who don't own mnms or mds is larger than those that currently do.

i think many on this board are disappointed because we fall into the group of people that already own Elektron machines. But I don't think it's bad business for Elektron to continue manufacturing their products and keeping them in supply so they can sell more. Granted, they went beyond simply "making more," but I don't see why hardcore Elektron users should be so upset (setting aside the obsolesence issue). Elektron made updates to their existing product line at the same time that it refreshed supply. This move says nothing about whether they are or are not working on something new. Time will tell. Maybe we have ourselves to blame for whipping up anticipation to such a frenzied level.

Just some thoughts.

M

PS Ingrid, I would never resort to violence. I'll just come to your house and steal your mkII once you get it. I'll be wearing a pair of Allerian's Super Duper Space and Time Differential Pads as quiet shoes.

So, I sent this email to Jon in response to the one he sent me earlier:

Hi Jon,

I just wanted to point out one more thing to you. Did you guys not consider the fact that rather than upgrade my SPS-1 to a UW, I would probably rather upgrade to a UW MkII? In other words, I would have sold my SPS-1 and then used the $700 (upgrade + shipping) I spent on the UW MkI upgrade to buy the MKII. In effect, what you guys have done is both cost yourselves about $1000 and left me with no reasonable option (monetarily) to move up to the MkII. Kind of a bummer.

I know you guys like to keep in touch with your userbase, and I felt it necessary to make these points to you. Make no mistake, I still love your products (I also have a SFX-6), and can't wait to have my MD back!

Do I sound bitter? :-D

Of everyone bitching...I think you have the best case.

Ha! Thanks!

No really, I'm not bitching... more like grousing. : )

No really, earlier today, I was feeling a little bit aggrieved, but still excited (and anxious as hell!) to get my MD-UW Classic back. Tonight, after spending some time working and whatnot, I have calmed even more and realized that it's totally cool. It's just 64 steps and some extra sample slots. Honestly, I would kill for 64 steps, but it wasn't a deal-breaker before, so I don't see why it has to be one now. As for extra sample slots, I don't even have the damn thing yet, so who knows how much I might or might not want those?

For god's sake, I just want my MD back, period!!!!! :-o

I feel like my MnM has significantly declined in value since last week. Kinda bummed.

I guess it depends on whether you are talking about 'value' as a music making device, or as a financial investment with future monetary return...

I liked how the sidstation's value increased over time and the machinedrum and monomachine maintained a high resale value. So yeah i meant monetary return/ resale value. Judging by the initial responses, the new machines have just devalued the old machines.
