I figure if you're going to splurge on *any* part of your studio it should be your monitors. I wasn't planning on spending that much but after auditioning them alongside several other brands they just sounded so much better I decided to do it and consider them a long-term investment. The difference in detail in reverb tails is particularly noticable.

I did like the KRKs better than the much more expensive Mackie and Events though.

And anyway, a MD-UW + MM is over $3000 new! :-o

FWIW, i'm really happy with my event tr-6 monitors. they really should have a sub, but i still love how they sound. if you mix at low to moderate volumes, i think they have plenty of low end.

the company support is amazing as well... one of my tr6's power amps failed, so i called event and they sent a new power amp for free the next day- they didn't even ask if it was under warranty or not.

Yes, you are right, the BM6A are expensive.
But for getting good bass you need a decent Bass drive (6"-8").
If you compare, e.g., Dynaudio BM6A, Genelec 1031, Mackie 824, they are
quite similar physically, and price is almost the same. Take into
account that they are bi-amped, so its not just the speaker.
When I bought them, BM6A's where the less expensive of this set.
Although I also had to sold my soul for getting them.

Monitors are rendering physically the music, so they are critical in any musical
experience.
And listening music is one of the things that I most enjoy, even as much as
playing it. So I'm not considering just how they will help me to make a good
mix, which is important. The key for me is how much they help in
having fun whith both my music and the music from others. If you
have a good music intrument (which all of you already have),
you need something that let the instrument show its tricks.

Well this is all the crap that I tell to myself when I need to alleviate my sense of culpability. Probably I will be also happy with something less expensive.

The BM5a models have a 6.5" woofer...and they are $1000... I'll probably go that route next.

Anybody A/B the DyAudio BM5A and the KRK V8?

They are about the same price, if my memory is correct.

haven't heard the v8s, but i have the v6s and they are not good at reproducing low end. great on mids and his though. apparently, it's a known "issue" with krks. that's really the only complaint i have.

i'm using cheapo behringer truth active monitors. they do the trick for me.

the acoustics in my room are a much bigger issue, i should really do something about that. februari's sound on sound had a whole guideline article about room acoustics. definitely worth checking out if you're concerned about your monitoring system.

funny you mention that -- i was reading an old issue of sos last night, and the opening editorial/intro from paul white was about how companies are spending so much time focusing on bringing better gear at better prices to the masses, but none of them are even talking about room acoustics!

i'll see if I can find the issue in the store. . . thanks for the info!
