The great thing about recently picking up an A4 10 Years, 7 Months ago
I recently got an A4 from a friend of a friend for a REALLY great deal, barely used.

For the last few years I was always unconsciously trying to get the Monomachine to sound somewhat analog, at least on certain stuff.

Now I've realized that with the A4 I can now let the Mono shine in all its digi goodness without trying to get it somewhere it isn't necessarily best at.

Having the A4 was like the missing piece of the puzzle sonically.

Stay tuned for some fat analog coupled with searing digi!

One question for people is this:

When tracking the A4 do you record tracks in separate passes to its own DAW tracks or do you just recording everything as a single stereo pass?

Depends. If you're using more than a touch of the internal FX on any track, you need to separate- otherwise the mix is screwed.

Certain combinations of sounds call for separate recording- drones and percussion, for instance, should be separate.

The A4 is the trickiest to record of all the elektron boxes, in my experience.

Hmm. Yeah. This is going to take some planning on my part. Most of my tracks are captured as a performance to multi track with everything running (w minor automation and played overdubs by hand after). The times I've tried to sort of do it in pieces, it's always come out really flat and boring.

It could be cool to have some low fi smear on some A4 based things since everything else is separated out. Guess it will depend per track basis and what is going on in there.

did mine all live - partly controlled by the A4 to give a 'song' ( - read 64bar loops) and then live tweaks using the modular.

worked like a charm! 10 minutes of tweaks, cut down to 5 with daw. perfect

I like the mini keyboard on the A4 (I wish my MnM had one too) so I can play my weird warbly boards of canada style riffs on my left hand while I bash out beats with my MPC1000 on my right hand. A great pairing for how I like to play live.
